Qualified Medical Expenses
Qualified medical expenses are those created when you, your spouse or dependents
seek medical care that is not covered by insurance. These expenses must be incurred
after the HSA has been established. Qualified medical expenses include, but are
not limited to:
- Addiction rehabilitation
- Ambulance
- Artificial limbs
- Braces, dentures, and dental exams
- Childbirth and maternity expenses
- Chiropractors
- Crutches
- Doctor's fees
- Eyeglasses, contact lenses and eye exams
- Hearing aids and batteries
- Orthopedic shoes
- Oxygen and equipment
- Prescription and non-prescription drugs
- Psychiatric care
- Vision correction surgery
- Wheelchairs
- X-rays

Your HSA Visa Check Card
Paying medical expenses is simplified with the HSA Visa® Check Card. This card is
a convenient way to pay any and all qualified medical expenses at the time of service.
Use your check card wherever Visa is accepted.
Withdrawals for Non-Medical Expenses
Your HSA funds can be withdrawn for any purpose. However, non-qualified withdrawals
by individuals under age 65 are taxable and subject to a 10% tax penalty. Non-qualified
withdrawals by individuals after age 65, or upon death, are taxable; however, there
is no additional tax penalty under these circumstances.
HDHP Deductible
For individuals, the HDHP requires a minimum deductible of $1,200 and a $5,950 cap
on out-of-pocket expenses. For family coverage, the minimum deductible must be at
least $2,400, with a $11,900 cap on out-of-pocket expenses. These limits represent
2010 levels, and are adjusted annually to reflect cost-of-living increases.
